Hello Bow and Dunbarton Communities,

The Dunbarton School Board held the Bond and Budget Hearings last Wednesday during the snow storm.  Minutes of those meetings with great information is available here.  There were some very informative handouts provided and the information will be repeated at a meeting on Monday February 12 at 6:00 at DES which is the warned snow date of the original meeting.

The Bow School and Town Budget Hearing is scheduled for Monday February 12 at BMS starting at 6:00 pm.  The school hearing will be first.  The Budget Committee and the School have agreed to the warrant in principle, but the offical votes will be taken after the hearing.

There is a full slate of candidates for positons in Bow this year and the Baker Free Library will sponsor a Candidates Night on Tuesday February 20 starting at 6:00.

You may have seen me on WMUR talking about snow days.  So far we have called 5 snow days, had 4 late arrivals and one early release due to weather.  Right now our last day of school is scheduled to be Wednesday June 20.  We have scheduled the ability to have 10 snow days according to state law, but I realy do not want to be going to school during the last week of June.  So we still have two days available before looking at shortening the school year if needed.  Historically (since I arrived here in 07-08) we have averaged 3.3 snow days with two years having 6 and two years having 5.  So we shall see what March brings us, but it may be a record breaking year.

School years are now counted in hours and not days, even though we have a calendar of 180 days.  We could shorten our student school year by a few days and still have enough hours to meet the state requirements.  We have shortened the year in the past for students and had staff do professional development, but that is a rare occurance.

If (or as Jeff Trexler reminds me... when) the bond passes for Dunbarton we may want to look at how we will end school at DES.  There will be a tight timeline to get all of the work done in one summer and we will have to make allowances to begin certain work as soon as possible and may even think about shortening the Dunbarton Elementary School year more than the rest of the district.  Dunbarton Elementary has a long school day and meets requirements for hours with days to spare.  Right now this is only an idea, and any proposal will have to be vetted through the school board and the community.

Please consider coming to some of these meetings and especially the Annual Meetings to vote:  Dunbarton Saturday March 10 at 1:00 and Bow Friday March 16 at 7:00 at BHS.  Elections for officers is Tuesday March 14.
