On April 5, BMS fifth and sixth grade students gathered in the Pinkham Gymnasium to hear Acacia Woodley, a Florida sophomore and founder of TinyGirlBigDream, speak of her vision to create a friendship force across the globe. Sitting next to her was a beautiful double Adirondack bench just waiting for the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life.
As his BHS senior project, Jack Rich got involved with Acacia’s organization and developed a plan to bring the friendship benches to Bow’s youth. Our new friendship bench will be painted with words of character and kindness to help remind each of us how to act toward ourselves and others.
Acacia inspired and engaged her attentive audience as she conveyed that bullying is not an option, and friendship is everywhere. She told her story of confronting a bully in her own school; she ended up inviting the girl to her home and they ultimately became friends! Acacia stressed how each one of us, like the bench, is imperfect, yet we are each amazing in each our own way.
The colorful bench, sometimes referred to as a buddy bench, will rest in the recess area and will serve as a quick reminder to others that someone would like a friend with whom to talk. What a great way to spread sunshine and watch new friendships blossom!
Special thanks to Bow Plumbing and Heating for providing the funding necessary for BMS to get its very own Friendship Bench!
