Spellers Shine!

What an exciting spelling bee it was! On Tuesday, January 9, the audience listened intently as twelve grade-level finalists flawlessly spelled such words as “reprobate,” “grandiose,” and “truculently.” Twenty-five rounds and 152 words later, Madeleine Kropp, grade 8, edged out seventh grader and Runner-Up Sudeshna Chakraborty by spelling “ricochet” and “Methuselah” correctly to claim the title! Sudeshna had meticulously worked her way through nine championship rounds against Madeleine until she misstepped on the word “fluorescent.” This was Madeleine's third trip to the schoolwide bee; she competed in the finals in grades 6 and 7 as well.

As the Ives Spelling Bee Champion, Madeleine will advance directly to the NH Union Leader State Spelling Bee, which will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord. There she will compete against 200 of the state’s top spellers. The student to emerge as the top speller will represent the Granite State at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May in Washington, D.C. Good luck, Madeleine!

Special thanks go to Mrs. Kay Graves, the Ives Spelling Bee coordinator for the past 18 years, and to our official pronouncer, Superintendent Dr. Dean Cascadden.

Congratulations to all participants; they were impressive spellers indeed!
